Organizing your contacts on your Android phone can be a daunting task, especially if you have a long list of contacts from work, family, friends, acquaintances, etc. Here are some ways to better organize your contacts on your Android phone.
1. Customize your view You can easily organize your contacts by using Google’s Contacts app. It’s preinstalled on some Android phones but not all. You can download it from the Google Play Store if you don’t have it on your device.
Open the Contacts app and log in with your primary Google account. Tap the three dots on the top right, next to your account image. Tap on the “Customize view” option. By default, the app will show you “All contacts.” If you wish to change that, select “Customize.” You’ll be provided with a list of options that include a few defaults, such as Friends, Family, Coworkers, Classmates, etc. You’ll also have the “Copied from [phone]” category if you transferred some of these contacts from another device. If you’re doing this for the first time, you probably won’t have anything added to the Friends or Family categories.
You’ll need to add those manually to see only these specific categories or labels as they are called in the Contacts app. If you’ve already added contacts to labels, tap on a label. The Contacts app will show you only contacts from this category when you open it on your phone.
2. Adding contacts to a specific label Adding contacts to a specific label can be done in two ways in the Contacts app. From the App’s Main Screen, scroll through your contact list and long-press on the contacts you want to add to a specific category.
Press on the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner of the display. Select “Add to label.” Select a label from the available options. Alternatively, you can create a new one by pressing on “Create new” at the bottom. Name your label and press “OK.” The label will appear in the list. Tap on it to add the contacts you selected to your list.
3. Deleting or renaming a label If you want to delete or rename a label, tap on the three dots next to the label name. Select “Delete label” or “Rename label” from the menu. If you choose to rename the label, type in the new name and press “OK.”
4. Merging duplicate contacts If you have duplicate contacts, you can merge them into one. Open the Contacts app and select the contact you want to merge. Tap on the three dots in the upper-right corner of the display. Select “Link contacts” from the menu. You’ll be presented with a list of contacts that match the one you selected. Tap on the contact you want to merge with the selected contact. The two contacts will be merged into one.
5. Reordering contacts To reorder your contacts, open the Contacts app and select the contact you want to move. Long-press on the contact and drag it to the desired position. You can also move a contact to a different label by dragging it to the label name.
